Capture Knowledge

Operational knowledge, also known as operational memory is a crucial asset of any knowledge economy organization. Economist’s Report, Foresight 2020 stated knowledge workers are among the least productive workers in an organization. The problem is that operational knowledge is almost entirely “tacit” (factual information combined with judgement), existing only in the head of the subject matter expert. The challenge for organizations is to convert tacit knowledge into explicit or codified knowledge where it becomes a tangible asset. The looming retirement of so many “knowledgeable” baby boomers is driving companies to find ways to capture this asset before it is permanently lost. A recent McKinsey study shows the key role tacit knowledge plays in our economy.

ProCarta converts factual information of tacit operational knowledge into a process structure where it may be readily accessed and leveraged. A guided interview process captures in context detailed task level knowledge from subject matter experts. Integrating process and knowledge builds capability and speed while shortening learning curves. The costs and inefficiencies of “classical” training programs are reduced. Moving from tacit to explicit knowledge, combining learning and doing create a solid framework for continuous improvement.
